In this episode of Training for Excellence, we’re revisiting the “Lion Mentality” and how to adopt this mindset even if you’re new to CrossFit or fitness. Whether you’re just starting out or returning to the gym after a break, showing up consistently, celebrating small wins, and taking control of your schedule can lead to lasting progress and real results.
Starting Strong: Overcoming Gym Nerves and Embracing the Process
Walking through the doors of a new gym can be intimidating, especially if fitness feels unfamiliar. Many people join with a goal in mind, whether it’s losing weight, gaining strength, or improving overall health. At R&T CrossFit, we understand how tough it can be to take that first step, but it’s a courageous one that brings you closer to a healthier, stronger you. So how do we help members transition from feeling nervous to fully embracing their fitness journey?
1. Consistency is Key
Consistency is the foundation of all progress in fitness. To make lasting changes, our CrossFit prescription recommends attending at least three times per week, with five to six days being ideal. When members commit to a regular schedule, they start to see improvements in their performance and health. By prioritizing their gym time, our members take charge of their schedule, knowing they control when they come in and make fitness a part of their routine.
2. Set Small, Manageable Goals
When starting a fitness journey, it’s easy to get caught up in big goals. While ambitious targets like significant weight loss or achieving a tough skill are great, smaller goals help build momentum and boost confidence. For example, committing to attend the 4:30 class three times a week is a realistic goal that lays a solid foundation. As members meet these manageable goals, they gain motivation and start to approach each session with a growth mindset.
3. Celebrate Every Win—No Matter How Small
Every step forward in your fitness journey is a win, whether it’s lifting a bit more weight, completing an extra rep, or simply showing up for a workout. Our members track these achievements on the whiteboard, in the app, or by sharing with coaches and others. This creates a positive feedback loop where each success fuels more motivation. Celebrating small wins reminds you of the progress you’re making, no matter where you start.
4. Flip the Mindset: “I Get to Go to the Gym”
The journey becomes more rewarding when you shift from “I have to go to the gym” to “I get to go to the gym.” This mindset reinforces that each workout is an opportunity to improve and invest in yourself. It’s not just a task on a to-do list; it’s a chance to grow and push past limits.
Taking Control of Your Fitness Journey
At R&T CrossFit, our members build confidence not just through workouts but through the mindset they bring to each session. With consistency, goal-setting, and a mindset of gratitude, members can go from being nervous beginners to strong, confident athletes who are capable of much more than they imagined. This journey isn’t about perfection but about showing up, giving it your best, and enjoying the process of becoming healthier and stronger.
